On Wendy’s next day off, we decide to start searching for a house I can rent. Wendy reaches out to the local real estate agent named Janet who has become a friend of hers (apparently Wendy saved the woman’s cat from dying). We meet Janet at the first of twelve rental properties.

The first house we see is a few miles from Wendy’s and it’s backed by a forest of pine trees. The bungalow style house sits on a flat expanse of grass with a glittering lake just beside it. There’s a path that winds from the house to the water, and everything about it is absolutely beautiful.

“It doesn’t have a pool, but you could just as easily teach kids how to swim in that lake,” Wendy says as she motions to the body of water in question. And I like that idea. Immensely. A lake, with darker water than a pool, will make it easier to hide the authenticity of my tail.

But, I’m still not convinced this swimming school idea is such a good one. There’s just… so many things that could go wrong.

Not only are the grounds beautiful, but so is the house. It’s a sprawling, single story with a wraparound porch. The house is painted gray and the porch and window trim is painted white. It has a red door that matches the window boxes full of red geraniums. The driveway circles around a giant tree that Wendy points out as an oak.

On the inside, the house looks a lot like Wendy’s with a wide open floorplan. It has a pitched roof which makes it look even larger inside, and the ceiling is covered in planked wood. We walk into a foyer and on one side is the living room and on the other is the kitchen. Instead of carpet like Wendy’s house, this one has wide-planked wooden floors that are a wheat color. It has floor-to-ceiling windows that reveal the beauty of the surroundings outside, especially the lake.

“What do you think?” Wendy whispers to me, as Janet gives us a moment to talk, just the two of us.

“I really like it,” I answer, smiling from ear to ear as I look at her. “Do you like it?”

She nods. “I love it and I think it’s perfect for you with that lake so close… if you decide to do the swimming instructor thing.”

“Oh,” Janet says as she walks back into the room. “I forgot to mention something,” she starts, consulting a piece of paper in her hands while she nods. “Apparently this house belonged to the landlord’s mother who recently passed and he’s hoping to rent it as is—with all the furniture included.”

“It’s furnished!” Wendy elbows me gently in the arm, smiling even more broadly. I turn to look at her and frown.

“Furnished?” I repeat, shaking my head because I don’t understand the word.

“That means the house comes with all the furniture already in it, so you won’t have to buy your own,” Wendy explains, her smile even broader.
